Units to mL Converter (and mL to Units) for Insulin Syringes

Written by , who builds and maintains this site and is not a clinician. Every figure links to its primary source.

100 units = 1 mL on a U-100 insulin syringe, so 10 units is 0.1 mL, 50 units is 0.5 mL and 1 mL is 100 units. Unlike mg to units, this conversion is fixed — both sides measure volume. The only thing that changes it is the scale printed on the barrel.

Calculator inputs

Units ↔ mL

Pick the scale printed on your syringe barrel.

On a U-100 syringe

50 units = 0.5 mL

100 units = 1 mL on this scale.

Check the barrel says U-100. Veterinary U-40 syringes put 40 units in a millilitre. The same 0.5 mL reads 50 on one and 20 on the other, and that 2.5-fold mix-up is a documented cause of dosing errors.

mL to units table

Units = mL × the U number. Figures marked “over capacity” are more than the largest barrel on that scale holds.

Which syringe holds how much

U-100 insulin syringes come in three sizes, and the printed steps differ — the 1 mL barrel is usually marked every 2 units, so odd numbers fall between lines.

  • 0.3 mL "30 unit" (U-100) — holds 30 units, marked every 1 unit
  • 0.3 mL half-unit (U-100) — holds 30 units, marked every 0.5 units
  • 0.5 mL "50 unit" (U-100) — holds 50 units, marked every 1 unit
  • 1 mL "100 unit" (U-100) — holds 100 units, marked every 2 units
  • 1 mL U-40 (veterinary) — holds 40 units, marked every 1 unit
  • 1 mL U-500 — holds 500 units, marked every 1 unit

Anything over 1 mL — 2 mL, 2.5 mL, 3 mL — is not an insulin-syringe volume at all. It is drawn with a luer syringe graduated in millilitres, which is also what you use to add bacteriostatic water to a vial.

When you need milligrams, not millilitres

mL to units tells you where to stop the plunger. How much drug that volume holds depends on your vial concentration — use mg to units or mcg to units for that, or the peptide calculator to do the whole thing from your own vial.
